Scunthorpe & Taunton Camp

THE HISTORY OF THE SCUNTHORPE & TAUNTON CAMP.

In 1969, St. Hugh's Scunthorpe split with the Sheffield Regiment, and held the first Camp on their own at Margate in Kent. This was under the command of Capt. W.H.Walker of Taunton. Capt. Walker had formed St. Hugh's Company in 1949, and had recently moved to Taunton from Scunthorpe. The following year (1970) St. Hugh's was joined by the Taunton Company, recently formed by Capt. Walker.

This was the start of the Scunthorpe & Taunton Camp as we know it today.

Capt. Walker was the first C.O. of the Camp and he continued until 1988, when his son Ian took over. Richard Hall the present C.O. took over in 1991, and he was
followed in 2007 by  Andrew Campbell  who became the fourth Commanding Officer.

Over the years friendships have been forged, and people should be very thankful for what the Brigade and Camp has given to them.
There are strong traditions that we need to uphold so that the Brigade and Camp will go on from strength to strength.

Many of those who have gone before still give support in one form or another, and for this we are sincerely grateful.

Over  the  years  we  have listed the past camps, since Scunthorpe attended their first camp in 1950. In 1970 Scunthorpe was joined by Taunton Company,
and  this  was  the start of the long friendship between the two companies.
Richard  Hall’s  first  camp  was  Lowestoft  (1959)  and many of the other present  camp  staff  have given long service, both to the Brigade and Camp
over the years.

Camp  has  recently  seen  many changes in the way that we organise and run our  camp.
We  hope  that the new format is a good improvement and that it will encourage members to attend camp well into the future.
